About FOP Lodge 48

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 48 is proudly named in honor of Summerville Police Department Patrolman William Boland Bell (L-48), whose life and service embody the commitment, courage, and sacrifice that define our profession.

On the evening of Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at approximately 6:10 p.m., Patrolman William Boland Bell and Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Marion Eugene Wright, II were assisting a disabled motorist on U.S. Highway 17-A (Boone Hill Road at Parks’ Field) when tragedy struck. While faithfully serving others, both officers were fatally struck by a driver operating a vehicle with a revoked license.

Both men were killed instantly in the line of duty.

The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by courageous citizen motorists, who detained him until Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived and took him into custody.

This horrifying event sent shockwaves through their families, their agencies, and communities across South Carolina. More than two decades later, the pain of that night is still felt by family members, fellow officers, friends, first responders, and those who witnessed the tragedy.

Officer Bell and Deputy Wright’s names are permanently engraved on the marble walls of the National Peace Officers’ Memorial in Washington, D.C. A section of Boone Hill Road, near the location where they were killed, also bears their names — a daily reminder to all who travel that road of the ultimate sacrifice both men made in service to others.

Their selfless commitment, unwavering service, and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.
